Steel inspections should never be a box-ticking exercise. They should be about finding problems before they become costly delays or safety hazards. At MR Engineering, we take that responsibility seriously. Our structural steel inspection services go deeper than simply confirming what’s on paper; we look at what’s actually built. By comparing shop drawings against real-world conditions, we make sure your project is compliant, stable, and moving forward on schedule.
What We Found on Site in Edmonton
On a recent project in Edmonton, our team uncovered several critical issues that could have caused major problems if left unchecked. One of the first things we noticed was uneven beam elevations between gridlines two and four. This created sagging in the deck above, which compromises how loads are transferred, and had to be corrected before the structure could perform as intended.
At the north wall, we found joists resting on a beam that weren’t properly fastened. In some cases, the required bolts were completely missing. Without proper connections, the intended load transfer and stability of the structure are at risk.
We also identified cross-bracing welds that had been left incomplete. While it may seem minor at first glance, incomplete welds mean the bracing can’t provide the lateral stability needed to withstand wind or seismic forces. And finally, we observed unprotected areas on the metal decking where welding had burned off the zinc-rich primer. Because no touch-up coating had been applied, those exposed surfaces were left vulnerable to corrosion, something that could shorten the lifespan of critical steel components.
Why Early Detection Matters
Small oversights, whether it’s a missing bolt, an uneven elevation, or an uncoated weld, can snowball into major structural risks if they’re not addressed in time. That’s why our inspection approach is built around catching these details early. We align construction with the design intent, identify deviations right away, and provide clear recommendations that keep your project on track.
Whether you’re in the middle of construction or preparing for final inspection, MR Engineering gives you peace of mind that your steel is safe, sound, and compliant.
